My Comic of the Week 01-05-2013

Winter Soldier #18

Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Jason Latour
Artist: Nic Klein

There was sad news that came with the July Solicitations, there will be no more Winter Soldier and June sees its final issue. So with this being the penultimate issue of the series I had high hopes and I was not dissapointed.

We are treated to another artistic masterclass from Nic Klein, who brings his best to yet another issue. Klein's art has been one of the true highlights alongside this engaging story from Latour.

This issue focuses more on the antagonist of this story arc than Winter Soldier himself. You finally learn more about the girl who witnessed the Winter Soldier murder her parents and how she became the woman she now is, Electric Ghost. Nic Klein masterfully draws her memories as she speaks with Winter Soldier about her past. This leads us to the end of the issue, with an unexpected twist, which can only lead to a fiery conclusion to this superb team's time with Winter Soldier.

I dropped this title three issues in to Ed Brubaker's run, after having high hopes for the character and really not enjoying it. Latour's Winter Solider is the Winter Solider I was hoping for and I will be so very sad to see this come to an end. The only positive is Marvel have confirmed that Latour and Klein will be moving to new books, but after proving to be such a formidable force I really hope they get a chance to collaborate on something again! And if you have not had a chance to check this out yet I strongly recommend you do when it is released.

My Cover of the Week 01-05-2013

Masks & Mobsters #7
Publisher: Monkey Brain Comics
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Mike Henderson

This is a first for me. I have been hearing a lot of good things about Monkey Brain Comics, on podcasts and other various ways. And it was seeing this cover on Comic Book Resources previews section that made me really think I should check this out.

I love the layout of this cover, I am prone to reading things wrong, but I am certain that the silhouettes are being viewed through a champagne glass with a skull at the bottom. Correct me if I am wrong. I am still to pinpoint the exact reason I was drawn to this cover. It has used a great contrast of Black and White and also put together a great composition.

Thanks to this cover I have gone and grabbed the first issue of this on comixology and it is truly a great title. I will be hoping to grab the rest, and at the price they are, for the art and story you get, it is a great bargain. I look forward to seeing more from this publisher and also more from the artist.

My Free Comic Book Day and Star Wars Day 04-05-2013

So its Bank holiday Monday and I have finally found the time to write a post about my free comic book day. It was a busy day for me, being Star Wars Day, Charlton's last game of the season and also FCBD 2013.

I woke up early to travel in to London to Orbital comics to collect my free comics and also spend some time there before heading off to the football which was unfortunately an early kick off. I am so glad I did bother to wake up early for this as it was great fun for the short time I was there. Orbital had teamed up with Eggs Milk Butter a Comic Cafe in East London which turned out to be a great partnership for the morning, I grabbed a delicious coffee and possibly the best Brownie I have ever had, a Charlie Brownie, alongside my comics. It's just a great shame that I do not live closer to there cafe as I would love to grab a cake and coffee alongside some comics again.

Anyway more about the comics. I grabbed myself a copy of Marvel's Infinity, along with Image's Walking Dead, DC's Superman, Oni Press's The Stranger's and also Dark Horse's Mass Effect/ True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. The stand out for me so far, as I still have a couple to delve into, is Dark Horse's short Mass Effect origin story for Joker a fan favourite character from the series and also the great prelude to True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys with great art by Becky Cloonan and story from Gerard Way.

Marvel's Infinity had a great little teaser for there upcoming event of the same title. Written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by the superb Jim Cheung, the art was a highlight of this for me. I didn't really gain any huge clue as to the events of Infinity other than it involved Thanos and his henchman, which was already known anyway. This also contains a Thanos story alongside a teaser for Warren Ellis' upcoming Avengers original Graphic Novel.

DC's Superman offering was not what I quite expected. I was hoping for more of a tease of the new upcoming title from the superstar team of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee, but all this issue contains is an interview and some original artwork for the comic from Jim Lee. Apart from flicking through this issue to find this I have not yet read the rest of the issue.

Finally Oni Press' and Images FCBD issues are still currently sitting in my to read pile and there were many other great titles on offer, but there was a limit to the amount you could grab understandably as the queue was huge, going out the door of the store and round the corner of the street, and this all for some Free Comics.

If you didn't get a chance to head to a comic store for FCBD this year I strongly recommend you do next year. It's a great chance to talk to other comic book fans, get your hands on some great stories and just makes for a great day! I'll certainly be back there next year, and I hope I will be able to make more of a day of it.

A Little Gaming News: Lego Marvel Super Heroes

A new trailer has been released for Lego Marvel Super Heroes. I am really excited and was so pleased and surprised to see when this was announced. I won't go into why it was surprising right now it could get confusing. I love the Harry Potter Lego games and the Star Wars Lego games, I have been meaning to give the Batman ones a go but just have not had the chance. But now there is a new Lego game coming to our consoles this Fall and I know I will be getting my copy! Check out the new trailer below.
