My Comic of the Week 27-03-2013

Young Avengers #3:

Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Jamie McKelvie/ Mike Norton
Colorist: Matthew Wilson

Young Avengers is definitely one of my favourite series to come out of Marvel NOW! and this is another issue that does not disappoint. Gillen is writing relatable characters matched with McKelvie's incredible art. Every cover released is one of the first that grabs my eyes on the shelves. This issue had me when Loki was describing himself as being like Tyrion from Game of Thrones, a likeness that I can quite clearly see, its these associations with current popular culture that makes this title so appealing. This is the title I wait for each month and this is the title that I can see quite firmly staying on my pull list. If you have not given Young Avengers a try yet you really ought too!

Next Week is Superior Spider-Week

Sounds like my kind of week. Hopefully this will be the herald for the announcement of the return of Peter Parkers spirit regaining control of his own body. I have enjoyed Superior Spider-Man, seeing the exploits of Doc Ock being Spider-Man, but if I am truthful one of the reasons I pick up this title is the hope for the return of Peter Parker! More to be announced next week. For other coverage on this announcement check out the links below.

My Cover of the Week 27-03-2013

Marvel Comics;

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

Cover by Marcos Martin

After his surprise announcement and release of Private Eye alongside Brian K Vaughan last week comes this great cover he has done for Guardians of the Galaxy. I love the silhouettes and the contrasts of colour of the characters and the space. You can see enough detail on the figures to understand which character is which. This is just a great cover and it’s a shame it was not openly available in the UK or I would certainly have grabbed a copy!

My One to Watch for 27-03-2013

Guardians of the Galaxy #1

Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Steve McNiven
Inker: John Dell
Colorist: Justin Ponsor

This may come as no surprise, but my one to watch for this weeks releases is Guardians of the Galaxy #1. I am really looking forward to seeing the first proper instalment of this teams adventures. With art by Steve McNiven and colors by Justin Ponsor I am certain this book is going to look great. But I won't know more until Wednesday. If your also looking forward to this or your new to the team and not sure whether to pick it up you should check out the free Marvel Infinite comics coming out which tell one shot stories focused on each character. Click the pictures below to follow the link to the Marvel Digital Comics store and grab these now. There will be one every 2 weeks, until the team is complete I presume.

Game of Thrones Season 3: Extended Trailer

We are only a week away from the new series of Game of Thrones and there was another trailer released earlier in the week. This is by far one of the best shows on TV and I for one can not wait for its return. Check out the trailer below and decide for yourself if you will be tuning in, and who's side are you on?

My Runner-Ups for the Cover of the Week 20-03-2013

So I have some honorable mentions who were runners up for the cover of the week. There were so many great covers out this week and I just wanted to showcase a few more of my favourites, so here we go;

New Avengers #4

Cover By: Jock

One of the highlights of this current arc of New Avengers by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting are the accompanying covers by Jock. Every cover that has been released so far has just looked gorgeous. Jock is, in my opinion, one of the best cover artists out there and I hope these covers keep coming for New Avengers and more. Also it is worth making a note that in the June solicitations for Image comics Jock will be doing a variant cover for Jupiters Legacy #2 can not wait to see what this cover looks like!

Saga #11

Cover By: Fiona Staples

One of the break out artists of the past year. Fiona Staples has been creating some of the most beautiful art to accompany Brian K Vaughan's wonderful Space Opera. This cover has so much more emotion to it considering the outcome of the issue. A grandfather intricately working and creating something beautiful. If you haven't been collecting Saga, then you should really grab it in TPB as the art is gorgeous and well the story is one of those that has you coming back to find out more every issue.

Doctor Who Prisoners of Time #3

Cover By: Francesco Francavilla

Francesco Francavilla is currently creating some of the most beautiful covers and interiors in the industry. How the man manages to create the amount of work he does is beyond me. And being a huge Doctor Who fan, Francavilla has been drawing great covers for this series with an issue out each month featuring a tale for each regeneration of the Doctor to celebrate Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. If you love these covers then be sure to check out his Blog where he draws a poster after each episode of Doctor Who, and they are all great. I am making the effort to grab each of these covers. My understanding is they will all interlink, and you just know the final image from the 12 issues will look incredible.

So there's my honourable mentions. Not long now till another great week of comics arrive!

My Comic of the Week 20-03-2013

Nova #2:

Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer:Jeph Loeb
Artist: Ed McGuinness
Colorist: Marte Garcia
Inker: Dexter Vines

I have found it very difficult to get into the Marvel Cosmic universe in the past. But they are now doing great things to introduce you to, and gain a new audience to this great corner of the Marvel Universe. Nova #2 is still introducing us to the main character Sam Alexander, with an appearance from Gamora and Rocket Raccoon of soon to be Guardians of the Galaxy fame, and what a great origin this is. This is turning out to be one of my favourite titles to come out of Marvel NOW! With a heartfelt story, great art and a main character who is as easy to relate to as Peter Parker, yes I went there. I don't want to give to much away, but I recommend anyone looking for a new book to pick up,  and only being 2 issues in, this should be on the top of your list! Keep up the good work Jeph and Ed!!

Neil Gaiman returning to Marvel Comics

Neil Gaiman will be making his return to Marvel comics this June. Collaborating on the ending of Age of Ultron #10 with Brian Michael Bendis before co-writing Guardians of the Galaxy #5 once again alongside Bendis.

This is to pave the way for Neil to bring along one of his creator owned characters to the Marvel universe, Angela, who first appeared in Spawn #9 who he co-created with Todd Macfarlane.

Angela will first appear in the ending of Age of Ultron #10, this seems to be the first reveal of this super secret ending which is only known by Bendis, Quesada and a secret few, but also obviously now Gaiman himself.

It will be interesting to see if any other new characters are to appear at the ending of Age of Ultron. I can't imagine this will be the only exciting

news to be released regarding the super secret ending. Marvel have gone to such lengths to keep the ending TOP SECRET that to reveal the big surprise so soon would make no sense, there must be more to come.

But for now I am really excited to hear Gaiman is coming to the Marvel Universe and it looks like I have some research to do on this new character who will be appearing. Another exciting point to note is that with Gaiman helping write Guardians of the Galaxy #5 to be drawn by Sara Pichelli you just know that Angela is gonna look great!

My Cover of the Week 20-03-2013

Dark Horse Comics;

Star Wars Legacy #1 (Phantom Variant)

Cover by Gabriel Hardman

It was a tough decision this week. With several covers in the running. But I have had my eyes on this ever since an image surfaced on Bleeding Cool earlier in the year. This is just a beautiful cover, with homage to old Star Wars Posters. After seeing this I had to go and find other work by Gabriel Hardman and I recommend if you like this cover that you should check out his work on Planet of the Apes at IDW. My cover of the week is Star Wars Legacy #1 Phantom Variant by Gabriel Hardman!

You can grab this for as much as you are willing to pay from the link below, or alternatively just click on the image above. I am yet to read my copy but it is happily saved to my desktop ready for me to dive in when I am not so tired. All I can say is the art I have seen so far looks great and Martin is doing some awesome cover work recently, especially his cover for Guardians of the Galaxy #1 out 27-03-2013, and of course everyone should know Vaughan from his work on the Image Comics hit Saga among many other great titles. So go and pay your price for your copy now!

Work In Progress: Ultimate Spider-Man

Here is a work in progress for a sketch of Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales, based on the cover by Sara Pichelli for Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1. If I was to change anything about this I would have used a thinner line, I hope to post the finished product soon.

Doctor Who Series 7

Just one more TV programme to mention. The return of Doctor Who to our screens in just under two weeks time. New companion. New Tardis. New enemies. Check out the new Series 7 launch trailer below.

Game of Thrones Season 3

Two weeks from now Game of Thrones returns to our screens with Season 3. Having recently caught up on Season 2, and being a huge fan of the books, I can not wait for this new series to begin. Here is a great trailer for the upcoming season.

My Anticipated Title of the Week for 20-03-2013

Star Wars Legacy #1

Artist: Gabriel Hardman

I have been waiting for this title since it was announced last year. But I was not familiar with the creative team on this book and did my research. They have been doing some great work with Planet of the Apes for Boom Studios. Hardman’s art is great and after seeing some character designs by him for this I have no doubt in my mind that this comic is going to look gorgeous. I am excited to learn more about another member of the extended Skywalker/ Solo families, in Aina Solo and I really hope Cade Skywalker makes a cameo appearance at some point. This first issue has taken far too long to come around. This will be right at the top of my pick list, plus with Hardman’s incredible Phantom Variant available, pictured, I will be grabbing this alongside the regular cover for sure.

To learn more about this great new Star Wars title coming from Dark Horse click on the image below which will take you straight to the awesome iFanboy TalkSplode! with Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko talking Planet of the Apes and Star Wars Legacy.

Continued... My Pick of the Previews June 2013

Jupiters Legacy #2:

Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Frank Quitely

Quitely!!... Quitely, Quitely, Quitely, Quitely! Well I am super excited for Jupiters Legacy #1 and I am super excited for Jupiters Legacy #2. You just know this book is gonna look stunning with Frank Quitely on art, his past work is one of the prides of my bookcase. I really don't get why the solicitations feel they need to hype this up so much making unjustifiable comparison's, with Superman and this being much more interesting than his 75th anniversary, as the creative team on this is good enough to grab any comic fans eye. I enjoyed Civil War by Mark Millar and Kick Ass 1, he is building his comic entertainment empire at Millarworld and I just hope upon hope that this is as good as he is making it out to be. At least it will definitely look good. Another great thing about this issue, a Jock variant cover can't wait to see how that looks.

Cover by Dave Johnson

X-Files Season 10 #1:

Writer: Joe Harris
Artist: Michael Walsh
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire

I have never seen an episode of the X-Files, but this is a programme that has long been on my catch up list. Despite this I am very excited considering the creative team on this project. The character designs teased at the convention looked great, and with colours by Jordie Bellaire you know this comic is gonna look great. This only gives me 3 months to catch up with 9 seasons of X-Files, it can be done right? Maybe the imminent arrival of this first issue will fuel me and make certain I catch up with this television series.

My Picks of the Previews June 2013

DC: Superman Unchained #1

Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Jim Lee
Back Up Artist: Dustin Nguyen

Just in time for the new Superman film, ‘Man of Steel’, comes the new Superman ongoing, which I understand is within New 52 continuity, from the superstar team of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. This may seem like a sales gimmick considering the films imminent release but I am super psyched for this new Superman title, I am hoping Snyder can bring the sort of gripping story lines and respect a character like Superman deserves as he has done for Batman and with Jim Lee on art you just know this book will look incredible, roll on June and issue #1.

Marvel: Age of Ultron #10

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Brandon Peterson/ Carlos Pacheco & Joe Quesada

We are two issues into this Marvel event and I am still struggling to see how this quite fits in to the current Marvel Universe and most of all Marvel NOW! That’s not to say I’m not enjoying this as I am, well sort of. We have been thrown straight into the deep end and have no idea how we got there. Maybe more will come to light throughout the event and the issues to come. Plus with Joe Quesada coming back to draw the ending so confidential only Bendis and himself  know well that’s enough to keep me coming back and to be intrigued as to what this game changing ending is. I just hope this is as mind shattering an ending as it promises to be.

Dark Horse: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1

Writer:
Gerard Way
Artist: Becky Cloonan

I have been waiting for this comic ever since it was teased at SDCC 2012. Quite frankly I will purchase anything containing art work by Becky Cloonan, her self-published books ‘The Mire’ and ‘Wolves’ are just gorgeous. However I am very excited for her working alongside Gerard Way, who produced the award winning ‘Umbrella Academy’. Spiralling out of his album ‘Danger Days’ comes ‘The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys’, featuring two of the greatest cameos by Grant Morrison in their music videos, “Keep Running”. This is by far going to be one of my highlights of June; I look forward to learning more about these characters and just cannot wait to set my eyes on the art work.

More to come once Image and other publishes release their June 2013 Solicitations.

My Comic of the Week 13-03-2013

Uncanny X-Men #3:

Publisher: Marvel Comics
Writer:Brian Michael Bendis
Artist/ Colorist: Chris Bachalo
Inker: Tim Townsend

Bendis got me into the Avengers comics and Bendis has now got me into the X-Men comics. I am currently loving his run on All New X-Men and Uncanny does not disappoint either. We are now 3 issues in and it’s about time Cyclops was brought to justice for his crimes, enter The Avengers. Some great new mutants have been introduced, there powers and power levels are exciting and I love the way one of them, who has a flash back of idolising Captain America, is used in this issue. This series has a great supporting cast, new and original, I even find myself enjoying the way Cyclops is portrayed, however annoying he sometimes can be. I always found it hard to jump into the X-Universe but post AvsX it’s now never been easier to jump in.
